Volkswagen shifts EV strategy with physical controls and new models
Volkswagen is implementing a strategic shift in its electric vehicle lineup, moving away from purely futuristic, touch-based interfaces toward more traditional ergonomics. The company’s chief designer, Andreas Mindt, acknowledged that previous ID models relied too heavily on touch sliders, leading to customer criticism. New models, such as the ID. Polo and the upcoming ID. Tiguan (the anticipated successor to the ID. 4), will reintroduce physical buttons for climate and volume control, along with traditional door handles.
In terms of product expansion, Volkswagen is launching several new models across global markets. In Brazil, the ID. 4 Pro is entering regular retail sales with upgraded performance, offering 286 hp and faster charging capabilities. In China, the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture is introducing the ID. ERA 9X, a large SUV featuring extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology. Additionally, the new T-Roc hybrid has begun production at the Autoeuropa plant in Portugal, as the manufacturer prepares for future all-electric production.
The company is also leveraging established brand names to boost consumer trust. The transition from the ID. 4 to the ID. Tiguan is viewed as a marketing strategy to connect new electric technology with the highly successful Tiguan nameplate.
