Volkswagen unveils ID. California Cruise electric campervan

Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. California Cruise, its first fully electric campervan, at the Caravan Salon 2026 in Düsseldorf. Built on the ID. Buzz Pro platform, the model marks the beginning of a new generation of electric California models expected to expand through 2028.

Designed for spontaneous trips and weekend getaways, the vehicle features a simplified, lightweight interior to manage weight and range. It includes a sleeping area for two with a 2.03-meter by 1.20-meter mattress, along with camping essentials like a table, two chairs, and window ventilation grilles. A specialized ‘California Mode’ allows users to manage lighting, USB power, and climate control for up to 48 hours while parked.

The van supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, enabling it to act as a mobile power station with up to 2,000 watts of continuous power for appliances like coffee makers or electric stoves. Customers can choose between a short wheelbase with a 79 kWh battery or a longer version with an 86 kWh battery. In Germany, the starting price is set at approximately 60,761 euros, with initial deliveries anticipated in early 2027.
