Volkswagen considers importing Chinese-developed electric models to Europe

Volkswagen is considering importing electric vehicle models developed in China to the European market. CEO Thomas Schäfer confirmed during the Paris Motor Show that the company is preparing to introduce one or more Chinese-developed models to expand its European lineup, rather than replacing existing European models.

Over the past two years, Volkswagen has restructured its vehicle development in China to significantly reduce material and engineering costs. The company has already begun exporting some Chinese-developed models to markets such as Australia and the Middle East. Potential candidates for the European market include the ID. Unyx 09, an electric sedan developed in collaboration with Xpeng, and the ID. Era, a large 5.2-meter crossover SUV. The ID. Aura T6, a 4.8-meter crossover, is also under consideration.

While this strategy offers cost advantages, it faces potential challenges from European import duties and countervailing duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
