Volkswagen to debut all-electric ID. Tiguan in 2027
Volkswagen has announced a strategic shift in its electric vehicle naming convention with the upcoming debut of the ID. Tiguan. Scheduled for a world premiere in early October 2026, the all-electric SUV is expected to enter international markets in early 2027.
The ID. Tiguan is set to replace the current ID. 4 and ID. 5 models in the company’s electric lineup. This move aligns with a broader strategy to use established, high-recognition names for electric models, similar to the approach taken with the ID. Polo. Unlike previous ID models that featured distinct styling, the ID. Tiguan will be designed to look more closely related to the traditional internal combustion Tiguan, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional and electric offerings.
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer noted that the Tiguan name carries immense brand strength, with over 8.3 million units produced to date. The new electric version will be built on the upgraded MEB+ platform and is expected to offer larger battery capacities and improved efficiency. The ID. Tiguan will be sold alongside the existing combustion and hybrid Tiguan models to provide customers with diverse powertrain options.
