Volkswagen approves major restructuring plan involving 50,000 job cuts

Volkswagen's Supervisory Board has unanimously approved the ‘Future Plan 2030’, a major restructuring strategy aimed at increasing competitiveness and reducing costs. The plan involves cutting an additional 50,000 jobs globally, which, when combined with previously announced reductions, could bring total job losses to approximately 100,000 by 2030.

To improve efficiency, the company intends to reduce its vehicle model range by 50% and decrease product complexity by 75% by 2035. The restructuring is driven by intense global competition, particularly from Chinese manufacturers, and economic pressures such as US import tariffs and shifting market demands.

The plan also places the future of four major German manufacturing plants—Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Neckarsulm—at risk, as production capacity currently exceeds demand. CEO Oliver Blume stated the move is a “strong signal for the future,” intended to make the group’s iconic brands more attractive and competitive through significant investments in research and development.
