Volkswagen unveils Smart eBike with automotive safety technology
Volkswagen has introduced the Smart eBike, a new electric bicycle featuring safety technologies adapted from its automotive lineup. Developed in collaboration with the e-bike brand n+, the bicycle is scheduled to debut at IFA Berlin in September.
The central feature is the Smart View system, which integrates a rear-facing radar and camera to monitor traffic up to 70 meters (approximately 230 feet) behind the rider. When the radar detects a fast-approaching vehicle, the system provides an orange warning on an integrated handlebar OLED display. The bike also features LED strips along the frame that brighten to alert riders of approaching traffic and function as turn signals and brake lights.
Technical specifications include a 250-watt motor producing 85 Nm of torque, a 9-speed Shimano drivetrain, and a 490 Wh removable battery providing a range of up to 162 kilometers. Optional accessories include Smart Glasses that act as a heads-up display, projecting navigation, speed, and blind-spot warnings directly into the rider's field of view.
