Volkswagen unveils Tukan and new Amarok for South American market

Volkswagen is expanding its pickup truck presence in South America with the introduction of two new models slated for 2027: the Tukan and a redesigned Amarok.

The Tukan is a compact pickup built on a modified MQB platform, similar to the T-Cross. It is designed to compete with the Fiat Strada and will be offered in two versions: the work-oriented Robust (single cab) and the Extreme (double cab). The Tukan will feature a rear leaf spring suspension to enhance load capacity and may include a 1.5-liter turbo engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology.

The new Amarok, produced at the General Pacheco plant in Argentina, is expected to move away from its previous Ford-based architecture. Instead, it is anticipated to share hardware with Chinese manufacturer SAIC Maxus. This new generation may include electrified options, such as a plug-in hybrid variant, to meet the growing demand for electrified vehicles in the region.

These launches are part of a broader strategic investment by Volkswagen to strengthen its position in the South American market.
