Volkswagen unveils new Tukan and Amarok pickups for South America
Volkswagen has unveiled a major pickup truck offensive for the South American market, debuting the Tukan and the new generation of the Amarok at the Barretos Rodeo Festival in Brazil.
The Tukan, a compact pickup built on the MQB platform, is expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. It will be produced in São José dos Pinhais, Brazil, and offered in two configurations: the Robust single-cab version for professional use and the Extreme double-cab version for lifestyle and comfort. The Tukan is intended to compete in segments currently occupied by models like the Fiat Strada and Chevrolet Montana.
The new Amarok, scheduled for a 2027 launch, will be manufactured in General Pacheco, Argentina. This new generation will utilize a platform from Chinese partner SAIC and is promised to be the most powerful in the model's history, likely featuring plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology with potential outputs exceeding 470 cv. This strategic shift is part of Volkswagen's broader R$ 20 billion investment plan to launch 21 new models in South America by 2028.
The announcements have already sparked competitive tension, with Ram issuing social media provocations regarding the timing of Volkswagen's promised lineup versus its currently available models.
