Volkswagen unveils Mission Efficiency electric concept
Volkswagen has unveiled its ‘Mission Efficiency’ concept car, a near-production electric prototype designed to maximize energy efficiency through extreme aerodynamics. The vehicle has set three world records, most notably achieving a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.158, making it one of the most aerodynamic road-legal vehicles currently available.
In a real-world endurance test driving from Wolfsburg, Germany, to Vienna, Austria, via Poland and the Czech Republic, the prototype covered 1,278.36 km. Utilizing a 54.9 kWh battery and components from the MEB+ platform (similar to the ID. Polo), the vehicle required only one charging stop. The test recorded an average consumption of 7.51 kWh/100 km including charging losses, or 6.89 kWh/100 km net.
The concept features a teardrop-shaped body, a low profile, and specialized aerodynamic elements such as covered rear wheels, active cooling flaps, and patented rim deflectors. While not intended for mass production as a standalone model, Volkswagen intends to integrate the efficiency-driven technologies tested in this project into its future mass-market electric vehicle lineup.
