Automotive advancements in electric vehicle efficiency

Automakers are demonstrating advancements in electric vehicle range and energy efficiency through new models and prototypes.

Skoda reported a range record for its seven-seat Peaq electric SUV, which covered 936 kilometers on a single charge during a test from Mladá Boleslav to the Netherlands. This performance exceeded its theoretical WLTP rating by approximately 289 kilometers. Concurrently, Peugeot expanded its electric SUV lineup with the e-3008, offering a Long Range version with a 96.9 kWh battery capable of up to 701 km of WLTP range.

Volkswagen has introduced the ‘Mission Efficiency’ electric prototype, which focuses on aerodynamics and lightweight construction to maximize efficiency. The vehicle achieved a drag coefficient of 0.158 and recorded a real-world distance of 1,278.36 kilometers during a test from Wolfsburg to Vienna. The prototype incorporates features such as solar panels to support electrical services and active cooling flaps to minimize air resistance.

Volkswagen further described the ‘Mission Efficiency’ prototype as the ‘world’s most efficient near-production electric car.’ Utilizing a tapered, teardrop shape, the vehicle achieved an efficiency of 9 miles per kWh, covering 794 miles on a single charge with a 52-kWh battery. While Volkswagen indicates the demonstrated technology is achievable at series production scale, there are currently no plans to sell the vehicle.

Recent details clarify that the prototype is based on the MEB+ platform, intended for future mass-production models such as the ID. Polo and ID. Cross. The vehicle features a 54.9 kWh battery and a 99 kW motor, with a 370 W solar panel roof that may add up to 30 km of range per day. Volkswagen executives stated the project aims to prove that high-efficiency technology can be integrated into accessible, mass-market electric vehicles rather than being limited to niche, expensive models.
