Volkswagen Zwickau plant faces political push to secure its future

Saxony’s economic minister Dirk Panter announced he will fight for every Volkswagen job at the Zwickau plant, stressing the site’s importance for the region’s economy. Premier Michael Kretschmer had previously assured workers that the plant was safe after receiving commitments from Volkswagen’s board and supervisory council. Recent reports that Zwickau might be placed on a possible “strike list” have prompted Kretschmer to travel to Wolfsburg to demand answers from the automaker’s leadership.

The Zwickau factory, transformed with billions of euros into a flagship electric‑vehicle production site, employs thousands directly and supports tens of thousands of jobs in the supply chain, craft trades and services. Officials warn that any uncertainty about the plant’s status would send a “devastating signal” far beyond Saxony, jeopardising both direct employment and the regional industrial base.
