Volkswagen's Iron Dome Plant Deal Stalls as Qatar Investment Authority Objects
Volkswagen is negotiating with Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to convert its Osnabrück factory in Germany into a hub for non‑munition defence components, including parts for the Iron Dome missile‑defence system. The plan is intended to keep the plant, which employs about 2,300 workers, operating after car production is set to end in 2027.
The Qatar Investment Authority, which owns roughly 17% of VW’s voting rights and holds two seats on the supervisory board, has raised objections. Doha’s concerns stem from Qatar’s lack of formal diplomatic ties with Israel and strong public support for the Palestinian cause. The QIA’s pushback could delay or reshape the deal, adding a geopolitical hurdle to Volkswagen’s effort to preserve jobs and diversify revenue amid a sharp fall in operating profit.
