Volos parents protest school class mergers

Parents and students of the 14th Primary School in Volos are conducting ongoing protests against a decision by the Magnesia Primary Education Directorate to merge class sections. The Parents and Guardians Association argues that the merger, which could result in classes of up to 25 students, will negatively impact the educational process and prevent teachers from addressing individual student needs.

During a recent demonstration at the Magnesia Primary Education Directorate, protesters engaged in a symbolic occupation of the service. The Association has reported tensions during these actions, including allegations of being blocked from entering the premises.

In response to the decision, the Association is pursuing several courses of action, including seeking legal counsel to annul the merger, requesting emergency fire safety inspections of classrooms due to increased student density, and collecting signatures from opposing parents and educators. They also intend to petition the local municipality, the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Thessaly, the Ministry of Education, and local Members of Parliament to overturn the decision.
