Volos school class merger protests

Parents and students at the 14th Primary School in Volos have initiated protests against a decision by the Magnesia Primary Education Directorate to merge class sections. The Parents and Guardians Association contends that increasing class sizes to up to 25 students will negatively impact the educational process and prevent teachers from addressing individual student needs.

Initial demonstrations included a symbolic occupation of the Magnesia Primary Education Directorate. As the situation progressed, the movement escalated through a six-day student strike and a symbolic blockade of Gianni Dimou Street.

Protesters have raised concerns regarding classroom overcrowding and the suitability of school facilities, particularly for children with learning difficulties. In response, the Association has filed a memorandum with the prosecutor’s office regarding safety concerns and is seeking legal counsel to annul the merger. The movement has expanded to include support from nine other schools in Volos facing similar infrastructure and transportation issues.
