Volta system offers specialized apps and kiosks for recycling in Portugal

The Volta Deposit and Refund System (SDR) in Portugal offers various tools and methods to facilitate the return of bottles and cans. To assist consumers, two distinct mobile applications are available. The ‘Volta Consumidor’ app allows users to check if a specific package is eligible for the system by scanning its EAN code or entering it manually. It also provides a map of collection points, including addresses, operating hours, and navigation options. The ‘Volta Euro’ app serves a different purpose, allowing users to link a bank account to digitally accumulate and transfer the value of returned deposits.

For users with larger volumes of packaging, such as those in the HoReCa sector (hotels, restaurants, and cafes), the system provides ‘Volta Kiosks’. Unlike standard automated points designed for individual items, these kiosks can process approximately 120 packages per minute. Currently, these kiosks are operational in Albufeira, Barcelos, Cascais, Funchal, Ponta Delgada, Portimão, and Vila Nova de Famalicão, with an initial expansion plan targeting approximately 50 locations nationwide.
