Theater programs offer inmates in Italian prisons artistic expression

Theater programs in Italian prisons are providing inmates with opportunities for artistic expression and personal reflection. In Volterra Prison, the Compagnia della Fortezza project, led by director Armando Punzo, has operated for nearly forty years. The initiative involves a multicultural group of detainees who collaborate with professionals to create ambitious productions, such as ‘Cenerentola’ and ‘Fame’. Punzo describes the work as an emancipatory tool that allows individuals to rediscover themselves through the creative process.

Similarly, at Rebibbia Prison, the Centro Studi Enrico Maria Salerno is launching a new theatrical path inspired by Marcel Proust. The program includes two acting workshops, ‘Tempo Perduto’ and ‘Tempo Ritrovato’, designed to help detainees engage with the past through words, gestures, and images. These workshops aim to provide a space where participants can observe and recount their experiences through a different lens.
