Rehabilitation programs in Italian prisons

Overview

Various initiatives in the Italian penal system are utilizing artistic and manual labor programs to facilitate inmate rehabilitation and personal transformation.

In Volterra Prison, the Compagnia della Fortezza project has utilized theater for nearly forty years to provide detainees with opportunities for artistic expression. Similarly, Rebibbia Prison is introducing new theatrical workshops, such as ‘Tempo Perduto’ and ‘Tempo Ritrovato’, to help participants engage with their experiences through acting.

Beyond the arts, the ‘Il senso del Pane’ project, launched by the Fondazione Casa dello Spirito e delle Arti, focuses on manual labor through the production of Eucharistic hosts. Originally started at the Opera prison in Milan, the initiative has expanded to 35 active centers and aims to reach 40 by 2027, seeking to provide dignity and employment to vulnerable individuals.
