Voluntary Social Year Enhances Skills and Career Prospects for Young Adults in Germany and Austria

Hannah, now 19, reflects on a year‑long voluntary social service (FSJ) she completed with the German Red Cross in the Kinzigtal region. She assisted the First‑Aid department, received medical‑pedagogical training, and led first‑aid courses for children, describing the experience as pivotal for personal growth and career orientation. The programme provides a monthly stipend, 24 days of vacation, regular seminars, and a service vehicle for assignments.

Around 900 young adults are concluding their FSJ in Austria, citing gains in empathy, responsibility, conflict‑resolution, and civic courage. Elisabeth Marcus, director of the supporting association, emphasises that these competencies are valued across social professions, businesses, and universities. Approximately 210 of the graduates count the year as civil‑service credit, a factor that has increased male participation in the programme.
