Volunteer Social Year Programs Expand Across German Cities

The city of Willich and the municipalities of Anrath and Neersen in Germany have announced vacancies for the Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ) and Bundesfreiwilligendienst (BFD) in municipal kindergarten facilities beginning 19 August 2024. The positions target young people aged 16‑26 (FSJ) or 27 and older (BFD), offering a monthly allowance of €450, full social‑security coverage and 30 days of vacation for a twelve‑month term. Participants will assist pedagogical teams with childcare, household tasks, and event planning while gaining experience in early‑education professions.

Separately, Thuringia has introduced a digital focus to its FSJ program, allowing volunteers with technical and media skills to support cultural, educational and civic organizations on digital projects. The initiative aims to create a win‑win situation for participants, who can develop competencies for future studies in informatics or media pedagogy, and for the host institutions that benefit from modernised digital services.
