Volvo and Audi address plug-in hybrid efficiency and range
Automakers are addressing the limitations of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology as concerns grow regarding their actual environmental impact. A study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) indicated that European plug-in hybrids emit, on average, five times more CO2 than official test values suggest, often because users rely on internal combustion engines rather than electric modes.
To combat this, Volvo is positioning PHEVs as a transitionary tool for customers not yet ready for full electrification. Nicole Melillo Shaw, Volvo UK head, stated that the company believes PHEVs need sufficient electric range to be used effectively as intended.
In the premium segment, models like the Audi A5 e-hybrid are attempting to bridge the gap by offering electric ranges exceeding 100 kilometers. However, these advanced powertrains face physical trade-offs; for instance, the A5 e-hybrid's battery integration results in a significantly reduced trunk capacity of 361 liters compared to traditional diesel variants.
