Volvo BZL electric articulated buses debut in Perth and Sydney
Australia’s first locally‑manufactured electric articulated bus was unveiled in Perth by public‑transport operator Transperth. Built at Volgren’s Malaga plant on Volvo’s BZL Electric Articulated platform, the 18‑metre, low‑floor vehicle seats 57 passengers and can carry over 100 standing. It is powered by a 497 kWh lithium‑iron‑phosphate battery delivering 400 kW and requires about four hours to recharge. The two buses will begin testing on Perth’s northern‑suburb routes in the coming weeks, with full service expected around August.
A second BZL Electric Articulated model was launched in Sydney on 29 June 2026. The bus features a 300 kWh battery, a 200 km range per charge and aims to cut emissions by roughly 80 % per kilometre versus diesel. While the vehicle supports Australia’s 2030 zero‑emission bus target, rollout is hampered by limited fast‑charging infrastructure at depots and funding shortfalls, with estimates that up to AUD 500 million will be needed to upgrade the network. Operators warn that without additional subsidies the higher upfront cost could delay broader adoption.
