Volvo enhances connected safety with new real-time hazard alerts

Volvo Cars has introduced a new over-the-air software update for its EX60, EX90, and ES90 models to enhance connected safety features. This technology allows vehicles to detect road hazards and transmit real-time alerts to other connected Volvo drivers approaching the same area.

The updated system includes four specific alert types: large animal detection, vulnerable user alerts (such as pedestrians or cyclists), roadwork notifications, and accident warnings. These features utilize the vehicle's cameras and sensors to identify risks and share the data via the cloud.

According to Åsa Haglund, head of safety at Volvo, the increased computing power of newer models makes this functionality possible. To maintain driver trust, the company aims to ensure alerts are meaningful and do not overwhelm the user. Furthermore, through the European Data for Road Safety ecosystem, this information can be shared with vehicles of other brands and national traffic management centers.
