Volvo expands EV lineup, safety tech, and hybrid strategy

Overview

Volvo’s electric-vehicle programme accelerated through mid-2026. Production of the SPA3-based EX60 midsize SUV began at Torslanda in April, with European deliveries starting in July. In August 2026, Volvo Car Malaysia announced an updated EX90 electric SUV featuring a transition from a 400-volt to an 800-volt electrical architecture. To enhance driver safety, Volvo introduced an over-the-air software update for the EX60, EX90, and ES90 models. This ‘Connected Safety’ technology utilizes vehicle cameras and sensors to enable vehicle-to-vehicle communication, providing real-time alerts for large animals, pedestrians, cyclists, roadworks, or accidents. Through the European Road Safety Data system, these alerts can be shared with other vehicle brands and traffic management authorities. Åsa Haglund, head of safety at Volvo, noted that the increased computing power of newer models enables this functionality. In response to challenges such as high costs and charging infrastructure limitations, Volvo is also adjusting its electrification strategy by increasing investment in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The company aims for 90% to 100% of global sales to be electrified by 2030. To extend driving range, Volvo is increasing PHEV battery capacities from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh, targeting a range of approximately 91 kilometers. Expanding its footprint in South America, Volvo launched the ES90 in Brazil, priced at R$ 659,950.
