Volvo introduces adaptive safety belt for EX60 electric SUV

Volvo Cars has unveiled a multi‑adaptive safety belt for its new fully electric SUV, the EX60. The belt uses data from internal and external sensors to adjust its tension in real time, tailoring protection to the occupant’s height, weight, body proportions and seating position, as well as the severity of a crash. For larger occupants the belt can provide higher load capacity, while for smaller passengers it reduces tension to lower the risk of rib fractures.

The development builds on Volvo’s century‑long safety research, including the creation of a world‑first pregnant‑woman crash‑test dummy called “Linda” and the company’s Equal Vehicles for All (E.V.A.) initiative, which shares safety data freely. The adaptive belt was recognized by TIME magazine as one of the best inventions of 2025.
