Volvo launches first Australian-made electric trucks
Volvo Group Australia rolled the first battery‑electric trucks built by an original equipment manufacturer in Australia at its Wacol plant in Queensland. The launch was marked by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Volvo executives Roger Alm and Martin Merrick, and Linfox CEO Mark Mazurek, whose company will be the first customer for the new electric prime movers.
The trucks demonstrate Australia’s ability to produce heavy‑vehicle EVs to global standards and support the country’s target to reduce transport‑related emissions – about 22 % of national carbon output. Volvo highlighted the need for continued collaboration with government on policy, weight‑limit harmonisation, procurement commitments and charging‑infrastructure investment to accelerate the shift to zero‑tailpipe freight.
Volvo executives said the milestone underscores a long‑term commitment to the Australian market and the role of electric trucks in the nation’s net‑zero transition, while the government praised the project as evidence of Australian manufacturing capability.
