Geely and Volvo advance EV technology and hybrid strategies

Automotive manufacturers Geely Holding Group and Volvo are implementing diverse strategies to address shifting consumer demand in the electric vehicle market.

Geely is advancing high-voltage technology, developing a 1,000V architecture aimed at reducing charging times to under 5.5 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge. The group is also testing next-generation solid-state batteries with energy densities up to 500 Wh/kg, which could potentially enable driving ranges exceeding 1,000 km. These technologies are expected to be piloted across brands like Zeekr, Polestar, and Lotus by 2027.

Volvo is pivoting toward enhanced plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as a bridge for consumers not yet ready for full electrification. The company is investing in larger batteries to provide significantly extended electric-only ranges, such as the 200 km range seen in the new XC70. Additionally, Volvo is preparing for the full EV market with models like the EX60, which targets high range and fast charging capabilities to compete with traditional internal combustion vehicles.
