Volvo shifts focus toward high-range plug-in hybrids
Volvo is adjusting its electrification strategy by increasing investment in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with extended electric range. The company aims for 90% to 100% of its global sales to be electrified models—comprising both fully electric and plug-in hybrids—by 2030.
This strategic shift responds to challenges slowing the transition to full electric vehicles, including high costs, insufficient charging infrastructure, and consumer concerns regarding limited driving range. To address these issues, Volvo is increasing battery capacities in its PHEV models from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh, which can provide an electric range of approximately 91 kilometers.
Volvo's plug-in hybrid sales have seen significant growth, surpassing one million units globally in 2025. Popular models include the XC60 Recharge and the XC90 Recharge. While the company continues to promote fully electric models, these high-range hybrid versions may remain in the product lineup for several years beyond 2030.
