Volvo to launch larger, cheaper EX50 electric SUV in 2027
Volvo Cars plans to introduce a new compact electric SUV, the EX50, in autumn 2027. The model will replace the current EX40, offering a longer, taller and wider body while being priced below $50,000 – estimates range from about $44,000 to $45,000, making it noticeably cheaper than the EX40’s roughly $56,000 U.S. price.
The EX50 will be built on Volvo’s new SPA3 platform, featuring an 800‑volt electrical architecture that enables faster charging and higher efficiency. Production is slated to start at a brand‑new factory in Košice, Slovakia, a €1.1 billion investment with an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles. Volvo expects to sell around 10,000 units in the United States in the first year and projects a total annual output of up to 90,000 units.
Volvo will retain the XC40 model for several more years, while the EX50 is positioned to compete directly with popular compact electric SUVs such as Tesla’s Model Y, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Ford’s Mustang Mach‑E.
