Vonovia CEO positions company as solution to Berlin housing crisis
Vonovia CEO Luka Mucic has positioned the real estate giant as a key player in addressing Berlin’s housing crisis. Speaking ahead of the Berlin House of Representatives elections, Mucic emphasized that the company is committed to being ‘part of the solution’ through increased new construction and energy-efficient modernizations.
Vonovia currently has approximately 1,000 new residential units under construction in Berlin and has completed 6,000 since 2013. Mucic noted that while these efforts are significant, they are only a ‘drop in the ocean’ given the scale of demand. The company, which owns roughly 130,000 apartments in Berlin alongside its subsidiary Deutsche Wohnen, holds less than eight percent of the city’s total housing stock.
Mucic also expressed opposition to the expropriation of private housing stocks, suggesting instead that the focus should be on creating frameworks that encourage new construction. He voiced confidence in federal plans to implement a ban on state-level expropriations to protect private housing development. To manage costs for tenants, Vonovia is investing in serial renovation methods and energy upgrades to reduce utility expenses.
