Évora 27 opening ceremony set for February 2027

The opening ceremony for Évora 27, the European Capital of Culture, is scheduled for February 6, 2027. The event will feature a large-scale performance directed by Marco Martins at Rossio de São Brás, near the city's historic center.

Artistic director John Romão stated the production will be a musical, visual, and choreographic spectacle involving approximately 400 participants, including both professional artists and local amateurs. The performance is centered on the theme of ‘Vagar’, a traditional Alentejo expression.

Featured performers include Portuguese singer Carminho, Colombian artist Lucrecia Dalt, Iranian musician Mohammad Reza Mortazavi, and Spanish artist Yeray Cortés. The project emphasizes community involvement, utilizing artistic residencies and collaboration with regional cultural associations to develop the performance.
