Évora European Capital of Culture 2027 preparations

Preparations for Évora’s designation as the European Capital of Culture 2027 are advancing through infrastructure development and event planning.

The Évora Municipal Council reported a 94.1% contractual execution rate for Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) projects. Of the five planned cultural heritage projects, three are active, involving €6.54 million of the €6.95 million in approved funding. These include the Antigos Celeiros da EPAC, the Arena de Évora, and the Rossio de São Brás. However, the Municipal Photographic Archive and the Convento dos Remédios have seen no execution because public tenders remained deserted.

Regarding the cultural programming, the opening ceremony is scheduled for February 6, 2027. The event will feature a large-scale performance directed by Marco Martins at Rossio de São Brás. The production, centered on the theme of ‘Vagar’, is described by artistic director John Romão as a musical, visual, and choreographic spectacle involving approximately 400 participants. The performance will include a mix of professional and local amateur artists, featuring performers such as Carminho, Lucrecia Dalt, Mohammad Reza Mortazavi, and Yeray Cortés.
