Vorarlberg faces critical shortage of training positions for new doctors

In Austria's western state of Vorarlberg, recent graduates of medical school are struggling to secure the required "basis year" training spots. Hospitals and the regional health office claim sufficient capacity, but dozens of young physicians remain on waiting lists, with the next available positions not expected until mid‑2027. The Vorarlberg Ärztekammer reported 15 cases where previously confirmed placements were withdrawn at short notice, prompting concerns that the region could lose new doctors to other Austrian states or Germany, where the mandatory training year does not exist.

The shortage has left many graduates idle, delaying their entry into specialist training and risking a future shortfall of medical staff. The Ärztekammer has intervened in several cases to enforce hiring commitments, but the systemic gap persists, prompting calls for clearer guarantees or alternative pathways for junior doctors.
