Vorarlberg nature conservation law faces criticism
Eight nature conservation organizations have submitted formal statements to the Vorarlberg state parliament regarding the proposed Nature Conservation Deregulation Act 2026. The coalition of organizations, including BirdLife Vorarlberg and the Alpenverein, warns that the amendment risks sacrificing legal foundations for the sake of reducing bureaucracy.
A primary point of contention is the potential weakening of the nature conservation attorney's role. Attorney Katharina Lins stated that the changes could exclude her office from approximately three-quarters of the proceedings they currently monitor. The organizations argue that their expertise is vital for addressing challenges like heat, flooding, and biodiversity loss.
The provincial government, led by Governor Markus Wallner and Councilor Christian Gantner, aims to simplify the Nature Conservation and Landscape Development Act by raising thresholds and shortening procedure times. They estimate this will eliminate 20 to 25 percent of current permit procedures. While the Vorarlberg Municipal Association supports reducing bureaucracy—particularly for disaster prevention and emergency services—it insists on maintaining the right of appeal for municipalities.
