Vox party pressures Spanish government over Morocco relations

The Spanish far-right party Vox is escalating its political campaign against Morocco, pressuring Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government to adopt more aggressive diplomatic stances. Members of Vox in the Spanish Senate have launched an initiative to rally the People's Party to demand the summoning of the Moroccan ambassador in Madrid and the withdrawal of the Spanish ambassador from Rabat.

Vox leader Santiago Abascal has called for the suspension of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness, and Cooperation between Spain and Morocco, arguing that current bilateral relations are unsustainable. The party has submitted a ten-point memorandum to the Senate and regional parliaments aimed at asserting Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta, Melilla, and other North African territories under Spanish administration.

In addition to diplomatic demands, the party has called for the complete closure of borders, the deployment of the military to Ceuta, and the immediate repatriation of Moroccan minors. Party spokesperson Beba Mián has criticized the Sánchez administration for being ‘lenient’ toward Morocco regarding border security and migration issues.
