Vietnam's VN-Index climbs on oil & gas rally and foreign investor activity
The VN-Index closed the 7 August session up more than three points, reaching 1,768.6, driven by strong gains in oil‑gas and chemical stocks such as GAS, BSR, PLX, CNG and PVT, which posted increases of 4‑7%.
State‑owned enterprises also saw a rally; shares of GVR, BCM, GAS and PLX rose sharply, with several exceeding a 5% gain. The surge followed a decree signed on 5 August by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Văn Thắng outlining new criteria for classifying and restructuring state‑capital holdings in public enterprises.
Foreign investors remained net sellers overall, offloading about 76 billion VND across the market. However, they were net buyers of DMX, purchasing roughly 682 billion VND, while VHM was the top‑selling stock with a net outflow of about 285 billion VND.
The combined effect of sector‑specific buying, policy‑driven optimism for state‑owned firms, and selective foreign investor activity lifted market breadth, with 164 stocks advancing and 139 declining on the HOSE.
