Vrbnik grape harvest faces challenges from drought and heat

Extreme temperatures and a prolonged period of nearly 70 days without significant rainfall are creating challenges for the Žlahtina grape harvest in Vrbnik. Experts note that while vines in deeper, more fertile soil remain in satisfactory condition, those on the edges of the fields show signs of dry and necrotic leaves.

Agricultural advisors report that the lack of moisture is causing acidity levels to drop while sugar levels rise rapidly. This imbalance makes it difficult to produce the light, fresh wine characteristic of the Žlahtina variety, which typically requires lower alcohol levels and higher acidity. Consequently, winemakers expect a yield that is below the average for a regular harvest.
