The drought is causing a chemical imbalance where sugar levels rise rapidly while acidity drops, making it difficult to maintain the variety’s characteristic profile and leading to expectations of below-average yields.
In the Slavonia region, specifically within Brodsko-posavska County and Vinkovci, similar high temperatures and intense sunlight have accelerated the ripening process. Winemakers report that harvest timelines have shifted approximately one month earlier than in previous decades. Although the lack of rainfall has resulted in lower yields, there are high expectations for the quality of the wine, with some varieties like Pinot Noir already being harvested.
