Várzea Grande begins offering glargine insulin through SUS
The City of Várzea Grande, through its Municipal Health Secretariat, has begun distributing glargine insulin via the Unified Health System (SUS). This initiative is part of a national strategy to gradually transition from NPH insulin to glargine for specific populations.
Eligibility is restricted to children and adolescents under 18 with type 1 diabetes, and individuals aged 70 or older with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The medication is a long-acting insulin that typically requires only one daily application, which can help stabilize blood glucose levels and reduce hypoglycemia risks.
Health officials emphasize that the switch is not automatic. Patients must undergo a medical evaluation to determine if they meet the criteria and receive a formal prescription. The program also provides reusable application pens and necessary needles, alongside guidance on proper storage and administration techniques.
