Vukovar commemorates 97 fallen police officers from the Homeland War

A formal commemoration was held in Vukovar and Marinci to honor 97 Croatian police officers who were killed or went missing during the defense of Vukovar in the Homeland War in 1991.

The ceremony began in Marinci, where candles were laid at the site where ten officers from various units—including the Lučko Anti-Terrorist Unit and the Slavonski Brod Special Police Unit—lost their lives during an attempt to break through to the occupied city. High-ranking officials from the Ministry of the Interior and the Police Directorate attended the event alongside family members of the fallen.

The central ceremony continued in Vukovar in front of the former police headquarters. To mark the occasion, 97 students from the ‘Josip Jović’ Police School placed 97 white candles in the shape of a heart around a memorial. Local officials, including Deputy Prefect Darko Dimić, emphasized the significant contribution and sacrifice made by the police force during the conflict.
