Wałbrzych opens modern biomass heating plant
Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej (PEC) S.A. has officially opened a modern biomass heating plant in Wałbrzych, Poland. The investment, costing nearly 87 million PLN, utilizes forest residues such as wood chips and shavings to produce heat and hot water for over 45,000 residents.
According to PEC President Franciszek Waszniowski, the facility is designed to significantly reduce coal consumption—from approximately 19,500 tons annually to between 5,000 and 6,000 tons next year—resulting in a CO2 emission reduction of over 60 percent. The system features a unique heat accumulator, a large water tank that stores energy to meet peak demand, and a proprietary technology for recovering heat from steam condensation in flue gases.
The plant aims to enhance energy security and stabilize heating prices by diversifying fuel sources to include gas, coal, and biomass. This installation is noted as a unique implementation of its kind in Poland.
