WADA and SUEK announce 2027 anti-doping regulation updates

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Finnish Anti-Doping Agency (SUEK) have released updates regarding the 2027 prohibited list of substances and methods, effective January 1, 2027.

While the changes are described as minor, they include clarifications on wording and the addition of specific examples. Notable updates involve the S0 group (non-approved substances), where peptides have been added as examples. The S4 group (hormones and metabolic modulators) now includes substances such as imlunestrant, seladelpaar, SLU-PP-332, and SLU-PP-915. Additionally, eplerenone and finerenone have been added to the S5 group (diuretics and masking agents).

Changes also affect cannabinoids and glucocorticoids. Cannabinoid regulations have been updated to reflect current research on substances with delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-like effects, while vaginal administration of certain glucocorticoids is now permitted during competition.

In Finland, SUEK is updating its national athlete definition based on risk and impact assessments. This reform aims to concentrate anti-doping monitoring on a more targeted group of athletes, allowing others to apply for retroactive exemptions. SUEK will also update its KAMU drug database to align with the new 2027 list, helping athletes verify the legality of medications available in Finland.
