WAEC releases 2026 WASSCE provisional results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2026 provisional results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). A total of 512,862 candidates participated, marking an 11.07 per cent increase from 2025.

Significant disciplinary actions were taken due to examination malpractice. The Ghana Examinations Committee approved the cancellation of entire results for 861 candidates found in possession of mobile phones and the cancellation of subject results for 7,434 candidates who brought unauthorized materials, such as textbooks and prepared notes, into exam halls. Additionally, results for 270 candidates have been withheld for other suspected offenses, and results for 169 schools are being investigated for alleged collusion. These investigations are expected to conclude by October 30, 2026.

Regarding academic performance, there was a notable decline in English Language proficiency, with the proportion of candidates achieving grades A1–C6 dropping from 69 per cent in 2025 to 62.40 per cent in 2026. Examiners noted weaknesses in grammar, spelling, and comprehension, as well as the increasing use of informal, contracted language common in SMS and WhatsApp messaging within formal examination scripts. Conversely, performance in Core Mathematics improved, with 60.75 per cent of candidates achieving grades A1–C6.
