In early September 2026, WAEC released provisional WASSCE results for Ghana, where 512,862 candidates participated—an 11.07% increase from the previous year. Subject performance showed a notable divergence: Core Mathematics pass rates rose to 60.75% from 48.73% in 2025, which WAEC attributed to teachers adapting methodologies based on Chief Examiner Reports, specifically improving instruction in geometry, arithmetic progression, and business mathematics. Conversely, English Language pass rates fell to 62.40%, continuing a four-year decline. Examiners noted weaknesses in grammar, spelling, and comprehension, alongside the increasing use of informal, contracted language common in SMS and WhatsApp messaging. Education Watch Executive Director Kofi Asare described this trend as “worrying,” noting that approximately 56,000 candidates failed the subject and calling for remedial actions at the basic-school level. Other subjects, such as Social Studies and Integrated Science, recorded gains.

Following investigations by the Ghana Examinations Committee, WAEC announced significant sanctions for malpractice. The council cancelled subject results for 7,434 candidates for using unauthorized materials and entire results for 861 candidates for possessing mobile phones. Additionally, 957 candidates had subject-specific results withheld, and 270 had their entire results withheld. Investigations into suspected collusion across 169 schools remain ongoing, with final decisions expected by 30 October 2026.

Concurrently, the University of Ghana instructed applicants to verify their personal and examination details via the admissions portal, setting a deadline of 11:59 pm on 8 September 2026 for 2026/2027 undergraduate applications.
