Overview

In late July 2026 the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released provisional results for Ghana’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), covering over 620,000 candidates and cancelling results for hundreds of students due to irregularities. WAEC warned the public about fraudsters offering to “upgrade” results and set a 31 August deadline for confirming the status of withheld results.

Early August WAEC announced that the Computer‑Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB‑WASSCE) results for Nigeria were available online via its portal, mobile app, and SMS service, while Ghana’s BECE results were slated for September.

On 4–5 August WAEC published the overall 2026 WASSCE outcomes: of the 1,950,726 candidates, 1,200,514 (61.5 %) earned credits in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics. The council withheld 167,486 results (8.6 %) for alleged malpractice such as mobile‑phone use and organised cheating, noting the pass rate had fallen to an eight‑year low after expanded computer‑based testing and paper serialisation. About 94 % of results had been processed, and digital certificates were to be issued within 48 hours of result checking. Results for candidates sponsored by state governments with outstanding debts remain inaccessible until those obligations are settled.

On 6 August WAEC released provisional BECE results for private candidates in Ghana. Of the 2,987 registered candidates, 101 were absent and nine scores were withheld pending investigation of suspected collusion during marking. WAEC rejected allegations of bias, affirmed that scripts are marked uniformly using an internationally recognised stanine system, and welcomed an independent audit if professionally conducted.
