Wales develops new energy strategy and climate action plan

The Welsh Government is developing a National Energy Strategy and a first-of-its-kind Climate and Nature Action Plan to address environmental and economic challenges.

The National Energy Strategy aims to establish a low-carbon energy system that prioritizes community ownership and reduces energy bills. Key components include the creation of a Welsh Public Energy Company and a Wales Wealth Fund to ensure local communities benefit from renewable developments. The strategy will replace traditional renewable energy targets with emissions reduction goals and focus on infrastructure that protects productive agricultural land. Cabinet Member Adam Price recently visited the Port of Mostyn and Port of Milford Haven to discuss their roles in supporting the offshore wind sector.

Simultaneously, the Climate and Nature Action Plan seeks to reach net zero by 2040 and achieve substantive nature recovery by 2050. This integrated approach will address climate change and nature loss across sectors such as housing, farming, and infrastructure. A new Climate and Nature Board, chaired by Llyr Gruffydd, will be established to coordinate government action and incorporate external expertise to ensure the plan reflects community priorities.
