Wales climate and nature policy development

The Welsh Government has initiated the development of its inaugural Climate and Nature Action Plan, a cross-government effort to address climate and nature emergencies as interconnected issues. The plan aims to establish a pathway toward achieving net zero by 2040 and significant nature recovery by 2050.

To oversee this initiative, a new Climate and Nature Board will be established, chaired by Llyr Gruffydd, the Cabinet Minister for Rural Resilience and Sustainability. The board is intended to provide expert coordination and ensure accountability by integrating community experiences to tackle the root causes of environmental issues.

This effort is being developed alongside a National Energy Strategy designed to create a low-carbon energy system. The energy strategy focuses on community ownership, reducing energy bills, and establishing a Welsh Public Energy Company and a Wales Wealth Fund. It seeks to replace traditional renewable energy targets with emissions reduction goals and emphasizes infrastructure that protects agricultural land while supporting sectors like offshore wind.
