Wales heatwave strains rivers as farms launch baseline environmental data project

A consortium led by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), supported by Quality Meat Scotland and Hybu Cig Cymru, is conducting the "Baseline Line for the Environment 2026" project on 178 farms across Wales. The free, four‑hour events collect real‑time data on carbon stocks, emissions, soil carbon, and other environmental indicators to help farmers make informed decisions that improve environmental outcomes.

Separately, Natural Resources Wales (CNC) confirmed that extreme heatwaves this summer have pushed parts of north‑east and south‑east Wales into a "long‑dry‑period" status. Record‑high temperatures and a lack of rainfall—only about 5 % of the expected July total—have reduced river flows, groundwater levels, and impacted fish, wildlife, and land management. Officials warned that the dry spell could worsen without significant rain in the coming weeks, prompting increased monitoring and response efforts.
