Wales Issues Red Heat Warning, Urges Community Support for Vulnerable

Public health officials in Wales have issued a rare red warning for extreme heat as temperatures climb into the mid‑30s Celsius. The alert highlights a high risk to life, particularly for older people, babies and those with chronic heart, lung or kidney conditions. Age Cymru and the Welsh Government are urging friends, family and neighbours to check on vulnerable individuals, offering help such as delivering groceries, medication or lending fans. Experts advise staying out of direct sunlight, drinking plenty of water, keeping windows and curtains closed during the day and opening them at night, using shade, lightweight clothing and sunscreen. Professor Sarah Jones of Public Health Wales emphasised the importance of community checks, while weather specialist Jonathan Powell warned that such intense heatwaves are likely to become more frequent and may be followed by severe winter flooding.

The guidance also includes safety tips for water activities and urges anyone feeling unwell to move to a cool place, hydrate and contact NHS 111 or emergency services if needed.
