Wales wildfire summit called as major blazes spread

Wales is facing a series of major wildfires driven by exceptionally hot and dry conditions. In South Wales, the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has declared a major incident as crews battle seven separate blazes. First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has announced a multi-agency wildfire summit to strengthen prevention and resilience, while seeking assurances from the UK government that National Resilience mutual aid will prioritize wildfire-affected areas.

In Mid and West Wales, a significant wildfire in the Nant Glas area between Rhayader and Llandrindod Wells has caused widespread disruption. The fire prompted the closure of the A470 between Rhayader and Newbridge-on-Wye. Local residents reported heavy smoke, falling ash, and the closure of local businesses and leisure centers.

Firefighters are utilizing helicopters to assist in operations, and there are calls for further specialist support, including potential assistance from the Ministry of Defence and the RAF. The Fire Brigades Union has described the conditions on the ground as “carnage.”
