Widespread wildfires scorch over 1,000 hectares across Wales

Satellite data and on‑the‑ground reports confirm multiple severe wildfires burning across Wales in July 2024. Fires have ignited in the Rhinogydd mountains (about 951 ha burned), at Blaenavon in Torfaen (around 220 ha), and in other locations such as Presteigne, Pentre Halkyn and Kilvey Hill. Combined, the blazes have consumed well over 1,000 ha of forest, heath and grazing land.

The Welsh Government activated crisis‑management arrangements and deployed specialist resources, including 4×4 vehicles, drones, i‑cutters and water bowsers. After criticism for a lack of aerial support, Natural Resources Wales secured a firefighting helicopter for the Rhinogydd blaze on 23 July. The Ministry of Defence confirmed no additional helicopters are available for deployment anywhere in the UK.

Smoke plumes have traveled up to 30 miles, affecting communities in Cardiff, Newport, Caerphilly and the Rhondda valleys. Public Health Wales issued health advisories urging residents to stay indoors, keep windows closed and use recirculation in vehicles. Local fire and rescue services, police and the Farmers’ Union of Wales warned of threats to property, livestock and rural livelihoods, and prepared evacuation plans if conditions worsen.
