Walid Jumblatt condemns Lebanon‑Israel‑US framework agreement
On 7 July 2026, former PSP leader Walid Jumblatt addressed the Druze community council and criticized the framework agreement signed on 26 June in Washington between Lebanon, Israel and the United States. He described the text as a unilateral document dictated by Israel to a Lebanese negotiating team he said lacked diplomatic expertise, and he claimed the agreement failed to contain a clear commitment for an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. Jumblatt’s remarks revived debate over the accord’s provisions on Israeli redeployment, the disarmament of non‑state armed groups such as Hezbollah, and the return of displaced persons.
The agreement itself envisages a phased Israeli pull‑out linked to the Lebanese Armed Forces re‑establishing sovereign authority throughout the country and verified disarmament of militias. Jumblatt argued the wording does not guarantee reciprocal obligations and that the lack of an explicit withdrawal clause undermines Lebanon’s security interests. His criticism reflects broader Lebanese political tensions, especially Hezbollah’s opposition, which views the accord as threatening its military role.
Jumblatt’s intervention adds a new dimension to Lebanon’s internal debate over the framework and its prospects for implementation, highlighting concerns about sovereignty, regional security and the balance of power within the country.
